The WHITESHELL COMMUNITY CLUB held its ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on Monday October 7, 2019. Committee reports were presented, and our finances and future of the WCC were discussed. We had hoped to have some new volunteers come forward to fill our vacant positions. The WCC is in URGENT need of volunteers to join our executive, and others to lead our major fundraising events. We have had changes in our executive, and will be losing many of our volunteers who have donated many hours to the Club’s operations. We are very grateful to have had them on board, and would like to thank them for all of their contributions to the club.
Presently the vacant positions on our Executive are- President, Vice President, and Treasurer. Other key positions vacant on our major fundraising committees are – Annual Christmas Craft Sale, Beaver Days, Canteen and Bar (Smart Choices required to bartend), Bingo Canteen (July &August), Annual August Flea Market, Farmer’s Market, Club Rentals We also urgently need a person with computer skills to regularly update our Facebook page, our Club website, and our electronic sign. It would be ideal to have a contact list of people who could be called on occasionally to help with set up for our rental groups, or community events, especially during the summer months. Presently we have to inform rental customers that they must set up and dismantle the rental spaces on their own.
Many of us are not aware that the WCC does not receive Government funding to cover costs of our day to day operations. We must rely on our membership fees and our fundraising events to cover the ever increasing costs of hydro, insurance, surveillance and security system, cleaning, and maintenance of the club. At times, the WCC qualifies for grants to aid in the Club improvements. We are very fortunate and thankful to one of our volunteers who sources and submits applications on behalf of the Club. In recent years the club was granted funds to aid in the construction of a Zamboni garage. In order to keep costs down, generous volunteers gave countless hours of their time to build the enclosure. The past two seasons of curling and our annual bonspiels have been cancelled due to the need for a new ice plant. A concerned group formed The Corn Broom Initiative, and are working hard towards raising funds for a new plant. Recently the WCC was granted some funding towards the new ice plant, with contingencies of upgrades to the building, which involves material and labour costs. Another major improvement on the wish list is a new wheelchair ramp, and renovations to add a wheelchair accessible washroom.
In a small community, a Community Club is a very important facility and we are very fortunate to have the WCC available to us. WCC has an excellent fitness centre (built by past volunteers) as well as a gymnasium for indoor sports. The club has a very well equipped kitchen with commercial appliances, and rental spaces that can accommodate small groups or larger groups up to 300 people. WCC also offers discounted rental rates for members. For rental inquiries contact – dar1fc@mts.net. The club’s future is not looking very bright- IT NEEDS YOUR FRESH NEW IDEAS AND YOUR HELP TO KEEP YOUR COMMUNITY CLUB ALIVE
