Manitoba Hydro has announced that the new portage route at Slave Falls was cleared in March and a few final finishes, including signage, will be completed over the coming months.
Due to shipping delays, the new safety boom and buoys at Slave Falls are now expected to be installed in June. Until then, the old safety boom over the sluiceway will be installed as early as late-April as a temporary safety measure.
The old portage will be closed in June just before the new safety boom is installed. Local residents, waterway users, and Indigenous and surrounding communities engaged on the project will be notified once the old portage is officially closed and the new portage is to be used. In the meantime, it is suggested the old portage route continue to be used.
