Freedom Road was officially opened on June 6, 2019. This road connects Shoal Lake 40 First Nation to the Trans Canada Highway near Falcon Lake. The gravel double laned road is 24 km in length and winds its way through forested areas and rock cut outs and over 2 single lane bridges. It was a scenic pleasant drive but quite dusty.
The Reserve had events from 10 AM until 11 PM to celebrate the opening. Many dignitaries were on hand. Chief Erwin Redsky introduced Hon. Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Indigenous Services of Canada, Hon. Dennis Smook, MLA for LaVerendrye and Deputy Mayor Markus Chambers, City of Winnipeg .
Coffee and a community lunch were provided for all and later a supper and an outdoor musical concert and fireworks. It was a history making day!
