Crews continue to clean-up a westbound 23 car train which derailed early Saturday approximately 50 kilometres east of Elma, Manitoba.
CN spokesperson Kate Fenske says, “The six tank cars involved were carrying petroleum products and a corrosive liquid. (There was no crude oil.) Three gondola cars carrying a solid, environmentally sensitive product packaged in cubic meter-sized bags were also involved. The product, Nickel Sulphide, is an intermediate in the nickel mining process and is contained. The other cars involved were empty.”
Fenske adds there were no injuries in the incident and no leaking of any dangerous goods. She says the investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing with the Transportation Safety Board.
She notes the line reopened at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday and crews will remain on-site until the full clean-up is complete.
