Manitoba Government Announces Safety Upgrades at Sturgeon Falls
The Manitoba government is taking action to improve safety at Sturgeon Falls in Whiteshell Provincial Park, with construction of safety upgrades expected to begin shortly.
The planned improvements are intended to provide additional protection and clearer warnings for visitors when the area reopens. Construction is targeted for completion in mid-September.
The planned safety upgrades include:
• Installing fencing to prevent public access to slippery rock areas with a high risk of accidents and injury.
• Updating signage to clearly warn against swimming and highlight the risks of slippery or hidden rocks and strong currents.
• Building fenced viewing areas to provide safer spaces for visitors to enjoy and view Sturgeon Falls.
• Establishing a new portage to provide ongoing access and egress for canoeists and kayakers to safe shoreline areas adjacent to the falls.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes said the Manitoba government has been listening to families, community members and local business owners who have expressed concerns about safety at the site.
The improvements are intended to make the Sturgeon Falls area safer before it reopens to the public.
