Manitoba Announces Safety Improvements for Sturgeon Falls Trail
The Manitoba government has announced a series of safety improvements for Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park following the tragic drownings of two children earlier this month.
According to Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes, the planned safety measures include:
• Installation of fencing to prevent access to slippery rock areas identified as having a high risk of accidents and injury.
• Updated warning signage to highlight slippery and hidden rocks, strong currents, and the steep drop-off.
• Construction of fenced viewing areas to provide visitors with a safer location to enjoy the falls.
The Province has advised that Sturgeon Falls Trail will remain closed until these safety improvements have been completed.
The announcement follows a safety assessment conducted by provincial experts and discussions with local stakeholders, including the Whiteshell Cottagers Association.
The WCA appreciates the Province’s commitment to improving visitor safety and extends its continued thoughts to the family and friends of the two boys, as well as to everyone affected by this tragic event.
